Full-Tang “Katana”
Approx. Length: 38 in. (overall)
Approx. Weight: 2.6 lbs.
Okay. I’m not even sure who makes these things, but everyone interested in swords has probably heard of them. Variously marketed as the “no-frills” or “full-tang” katana, these are the swords where a “one-piece blade is laser-cut from high carbon stainless steel and carefully tempered and polished before being fitted with the solid guard and riveted polymerized hardwood handle slabs.” In other words, this “katana” has a stainless-steel blade with a couple plastic-impregnated handle scales slapped onto the tang.

As stainless-steel swords go, this one is probably the closest you can get to a functional weapon, outside of certain custom work. In fact, it’s more of an oversized kitchen knife, but the quarter-inch-thick steel does give the blade some resilience. Just don’t expect a samurai to be very impressed.
The sword has been fully sharpened but is in new condition, though the aluminum (?) scabbard has a few scratches in its red-veined black paint job.
Price: $100.

Martespa 17th-Century Tachi
Approx.
Length: 40 in. (overall)
Approx. Weight: 2 lbs.
The tachi (slung sword) was the Japanese samurai’s primary long sword until the advent of the katana. Thereafter, tachi were reserved for use from horseback. In general, tachi are somewhat longer and more curved than katana.
This decorative tachi has a 420 stainless-steel blade, which
is semi-sharp. The tsuba (guard) and other fittings are plated in
gold and silver. The tsuka (hilt) is wood, wrapped with cotton cord
over some type of fabric. The saya (scabbard) is wood, coated with
blue lacquer and emblazoned with the Tokugawa mon (family crest).
.

This sword is in pretty good condition, as all it ever did was decorate my apartment. However, some of the silver plating has started to flake off in some spots and tarnish in others.
Price: $200.
